Regular chewing gum is made of plastic. The base is synthetic rubber, the same material as shopping bags and car tires, and on the ingredient list it shows up only as “gum base.”
Greco Gum is the alternative. People have been chewing it since 400 BC. It is tree resin and nothing else, and it comes from a tree that grows in only one place, the southern half of the Greek island of Chios.
Here are three reasons to chew our gum instead.
Reason one: the jaw
It comes down to the gum itself. Greco Gum is dense, and a single piece holds up for hours, so your jaw is doing real work the whole time.
The photos below are real customers from our blog. None of them chewed in a vacuum: they paired it with diet, posture, or training for months, so results vary.

After
“A buddy I hadn’t seen in a while complimented me on how my jawline was jacked.”
Reason two: it’s plastic
The base in regular gum is synthetic rubber, built to stay rubbery and never dissolve. It is the same family of material as a few things you would never put in your mouth on purpose.
Polyethylene
the plastic in shopping bags
Styrene-butadiene
the rubber in car tires
Polyvinyl acetate
wood glue
In March 2025, UCLA had people chew gum and measured what came off into their saliva. On average it shed around 100 microplastic particles per gram, and some pieces shed up to 600. Most of it came loose within the first eight minutes.1

The plastic does not pass through you. It settles in the tissues that hold onto fat. Researchers have cut open human arteries and found it in the plaque, and the people who had it were far more likely to have a heart attack or a stroke in the years that followed.2 They found it in every testicle they tested.3 They found more of it in human brains than in the liver or kidneys, with the most in the people who died with dementia.4
You are adding to that pile every day, for a stick of flavored rubber. Mastic has no base to break down, because the resin is the gum.
Reason three: the rest of the stack
The jaw is why most people try mastic. What they do not expect is how much it does for everything else while they chew.
Mastic settles a heavy, bloated gut and calms the cramping and reflux that come with a bad one.5
Bad breath comes from bacteria in your mouth. Mints just cover it; mastic clears the source.
An hour of chewing scrubs your teeth while the resin clears the bacteria behind plaque.

Real Chios mastic
It comes down to where it grows and how it is made.
One island
It refuses to make its resin anywhere but the southern half of Chios, across two dozen villages, the mastichochoria.
Rare chemistry
The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory compounds that do the work only form in real mastic. Cheaper resins from other trees can look the part and do nothing.
Cut by hand
Growers score every tree by hand each summer and wait for the resin to weep and harden into tears. A full year of one tree fills barely a single tin.
We buy ours straight from the growers’ association on Chios, so what ends up in your tin is the real thing and nothing else.
Before you buy
Make the switch
You are already chewing gum every day. The only real question is whether it does something for you, or just leaves plastic behind.
